On their mission to explore the Mariana Trench at the very bottom of the ocean, the deepest and most inhospitable place on Earth, the crew of the deep sea vehicle Erebus make an unusual and startling discovery. A battered blue police box. As the Doctor, Romana and K9 join them on their journey, the submariners soon discover that the TARDIS is not the only unusual find lurking on the sea floor. Super-intelligent squid, long-lost submarines and their miraculous occupants are only the start of their troubles. The Goblins are coming. And they won't let anyone out alive. Written by Jonathan Morris and directed by Ken Bentley.
Phantoms of the Deep Doctor Who The Fourth Doctor Adventures Jonathan Morris 9781781780589 Books
At its core, Jonathan Morris' "Phantoms of the Deep" is a "base under siege" story, which the classic "Doctor Who" series told many times in the past; indeed, it was a staple of Patrick Troughton's run as the Second Doctor. But Morris differentiates "Phantoms" from those other tales, and saves himself from accusations of recycling a tired trope, by setting his second entry in Big Finish's "Fourth Doctor Adventures" range (following "The Auntie Matter") on a base that moves...namely, an underwater submarine.
He goes on to populate his story with moments both memorable and spooky as Fourth, Romana, K-9 descend with the sub's crew into the depths of the Mariana Trench at the ocean's bottom. Then the pressure starts dropping, ghosts start appearing, and super-smart squid begin talking.
Morris tells his tale in such a way that it doesn't depend upon Fourth's and Romana's very powerful personalities, as do many other entries in the "FDA" range. Any other Doctor/companion duo (Fifth/Nyssa, Sixth/Peri, etc.) from the Main Range could be used here with only minimal rewriting.
However, unlike the Main Range, where writers have two hours to work with, Morris has only half that time, which by necessity forces him to move through his plot quickly, leaving him little time to generate tension. The pressure rises literally, but not metaphorically, because the story must move. In addition, lots of characters go in and out of the submarine, which reduces the feel of isolation inherent in a submarine because they're not cooped into one place.
Morris overcomes that flaw skillfully, by establishing in the first part all the required elements to evoke malevolence (intelligent squid, derelict submarine, large underwater body), then weaving them all together in the second part with a suitable science fiction explanation to create a brisk, enjoyable narrative.
Tom Baker is in his usual top form, blending his trademark with an ominous edge when events take dramatic turns. Mary Tamm balances Romana's haughtiness with unease during moments of peril. And John Leeson turns in a chilling performance as K-9, as the usually-faithful robot dog is possessed by a murderous outside intelligence. He's particularly menacing when K-9 turns on Romana in Morris' excellent cliffhanger, first trapping his mistress in an airlock and then expelling her into the ocean.
The real star here, though, is not any of the actors, but sound designer Jamie Robertson, who captures the feeling of the story's underwater setting well, with bubbling waves, creaking hulls, water filling rooms, and much more. His music also captures the melodramatic flavor of Dudley Simpson's scores for Baker's televised stories.
Well paced, with a blend of excitement and menace, "Phantoms of the Deep" is another solid adventure for the Fourth Doctor.

Phantoms of the Deep Doctor Who The Fourth Doctor Adventures Jonathan Morris 9781781780589 Books Reviews
The fourth Doctor's adventures in this Big Finish series have been great. Unfortunately, Mary Tamm passed away so this "season" is all we'll see of Romana with the Doctor again, and that's a shame because she and Tom play off each other beautifully.
A submarine exploring the deepest part of the ocean comes across an odd object on the ocean floor a blue police box. This story is a great one, seeing the Doctor, Romana, and a newly-rebuilt K-9 finding mysterious happenings at the bottom of the ocean. There is a trivial bit of business at the beginning to get rid of the Tardis so everyone can't just get inside and get away (something I always thought they should have done in most situations) but are instead forced to investigate the strange happenings. When they find another submarine from World War 2 on the bottom, what they find inside will change everything.
This story was truly made for audio. The sound effects are great, and you really feel like you're hearing the ocean around you whenever anyone goes out to investigate something. All around, my favorite of this season so far.
This featured Doctor Who on a submarine which wasn't Doctor Who had done before and this was done twice in Spring of 2013 in the new series in Cold War and this audio. This story, set between Seasons 16 and 17 has the Doctor landing the TARDIS on a submarine headed for exploration in deep waters. It's not long before the Doctor, Romana, K-9, and the Sub's crew run into an ancient alien threat.
This is a good solid story with nice action. It's not, however, enthralling. Given the impersonal nature of the villains, it needed memorable guest characters. And while the acting was okay, the characters didn't really stand out. I was between 3 and 4 stars on this one but went with 3 after a final plot twist involved a character revealing information never hinted at in the story and making fundamental change of character with no build up.
Still, there are lots of great moments to make this a fun and enjoyable story in Series 2 of the Fourth Doctor Adventure
