It was all supposed to be so simple and so perfect. Seven days before Clare's due date, Hal and Marla would drive from Chicago to Connecticut to arrive in time to share in the birth of their newest grandchild. At the same time, they would care for their grandson Kyle, since Clare's husband was on a navy deployment and couldn't be there for the birth.

After all, how difficult can it possibly be to care for a precocious five-year-old? And Clare would only be in the hospital a day or two after delivering. Grandparents are perfectly capable of attending a young child for that long, right?

But the new addition to the Masters household was anything but what everyone was expecting. For eight days, life would become a hellish nightmare for Hal, who must muster every ounce of courage and faith from deep inside his soul to confront something he could neither understand nor safeguard his family against.

WARNING This book will scare you. When your heart starts pounding, set the book down and walk away until the palpitations subside. And remember, it's only a story ... it isn't real ... or is it?

A Connecticut Nightmare eBook J M Barlog

This book started off pretty strong. We are introduced to Hal and Marla, grandparents on their way to be with their daughter for the birth of their second grandchild. They appear to be a pretty typical mid-life couple who've been married for some time, and have their individual quirks. We see the house of their daughter..which seems a perfect setting for strange things to occur. We meet the daughter, Clare, and the older child, and there appears to be a "back story" going on, involving the absent father of the new baby. Much is made of the young boy having black hair, and dark eyes. There are hints of trouble between Clare, and her husband (who sounds as if he might have control issues). Potential for a really layered psychological thriller seems to glimmer ominously from the pages.

For the first half of the book, indeed, things start happening that are troubling and seem to foreshadow the horror beneath the surface of this outwardly "ordinary" family. Hal and Marla snipe and complain to and about each other. Clare seems vague but with strong issues regarding religion (although, for some reason, angels do not appear to be inconsistent with her adamant refusal to acknowledge God.) The five year old child, Kyle, however, really gets one's attention. There is a disturbing scene where he appears to have an inappropriate sexual connection to his mother..one that he seems to feel she shares with him. There is tension in the air, and one is sure there is something lurking there, just waiting to spring.....

Sure enough...the shocker does come. But it's not nearly as complicated or intriguing as what seemed to be promised in the set up of the book. From the time it's revealed just what is "wrong" with Kyle, the book becomes pretty predictable and seemed rather like a formula movie. There are some exciting and scary scenes when Hal tries to engage Kyle directly. And certainly, while it's pretty easy to see what is going to be the climax in advance, it's still a pretty engaging ride. There are some scenes where Hal's reactions seem out of place and unreasonable (particularly his encounter with a priest); and while he and Marla had previously been a typical querulous couple; by the end of the book Hal is waxing positively sentimental over her. It was a bit of an uncomfortable switch in character.

There were so many ways this story could have been fleshed out and improved. No explanation was offered why Kyle was the way he was, nor was there any explanation to tie in the black haired absent father. What was the purpose in making such an issue with his hair color and that of his children? Why was he mentioned in a way that suggested he was an important piece to the puzzle that was the horror encountered by this family? The book seemed a bit rushed toward the end, and left me feeling a bit unsettled and let down. It was entertaining in it's way, and a quick read. But don't expect much depth. A pleasant bit of "horror fiction" to be taken with a grain of salt.
